Our Philosophy and Mission:
What's in a name
Our name reflects the transformative dimension of intercultural relationships. Once we have come into deeper contact with other cultures, practices, and values systems, we necessarily change, influence others, and get influenced. In other words, a process of cross-fertilization occurs. Inevitably, we recognize our transformation retrospectively.
Becoming more aware of our personal transformation while it is occurring can only enhance the intercultural experience, the journey we undertake once we begin working across cultures. Today the term ‘Odyssey’ commonly refers to a major enterprise involving adventure, travel, and great struggles. This is certainly one significant part of intercultural work. Yet the greatest symbol of the Odyssey is the protagonist himself, Odysseus (aka Ulysses), who represents the humanistic values of leadership, determination, and openness to adventure that we strive for. As in all great works of literature, the exploits and misfortunes of Ulysses lead the reader toward identifying with the hero, creating a budding sense of empathy. It is precisely along such a road that this Odyssey seeks to travel.
